10. Zombie Apocalypse (2011)

Waves of zombies that need killing with weapons of mass destruction; sounds like Zombie Apocalypse!.

Yes, we’re kicking off our list of the best zombie games on PS3 with one of the fastest, horde-slaying titles of all time.

Use environmental hazards to stop them in their tracks, hopelessly pumping scurrying demons with lead as you try to save civilians from certain death.

Because no one wants to be eaten alive! Though that is an occupational hazard for the remaining games in this list.

Players use dual sticks to move through Gauntlet Dark Legacy-style gameplay with up to three other players beside them. Pick a character, up their stats as you move through the levels, and earn points as you decapitate and destroy mindless monsters.

Use bait to lure zombies into certain areas and pick them off together or slay them one by one. You can even execute them in a slower, and let’s face it, cooler mode, for more points.

So the graphics aren’t as amazing as the other games below, but the gameplay is just as brilliant and chaotic.

9. Yakuza: Dead Souls (2011)

Yakuza: Dead Souls takes the 9th spot in this list of the best zombie games on PS3, the sequel to the fantastic Yakuza 4 with way more exciting (and terrifying) gameplay.

The zombies in this game can actually defend themselves, knocking off punches and kicks easily. That means you’re just gonna’ have to destroy them with grenades and shotguns instead.

Up to twenty mindless undead cretins can charge you at once in this game, making you go stir-crazy for a second or four. Add mutants and a baby that summoned zombies when it cries to the mix, and there’s so many reasons to wear your brown pants while wearing this game.

Just check out that still above…talk about making one bullet count for maximum impact.

Call partners into the action as you help to get people back into infected areas so that they can save their livelihoods and finalise ‘unfinished business’.

Weirdly there are also minigames too, which seems a little odd for a game where you blast the hell out of zombies. Though they’re actually a firm feature in Yakuza games, as are the dungeons where you have to survive while enemies do their very best to kill you in every which-way possible.

8. Dead Island (2011)

Dead Island brings RPG elements into the crusty-zombie arena.

There are so many ways to play this game and so many different things to find/save on the way through. It’s basically an open-explorative game where you get points for saving everything from teddy bears to family members.

You can either outrun zombies or destroy them, obviously the latter being much more dangerous and potentially fatal for you.

Pick your character based on their chosen weapon and fighting style, up points, and level up to get better skills on your character’s skill tree.

Every time you level up, you get better Fury, an attack that can destroy more enemies in the immediate area. There’s a catch though; enemies get way harder every time you level up, meaning that things never really get any easier for you.

Oh, and when you go back into areas that you’v previously cleared, you’ll find that there’s been a blood moon BOTW moment where all of the enemies have returned. Lucky you!

7. Resident Evil 6 (2012)

We just had to have a Resident Evil game in this list, right? I mean, would it really be a list of the best zombie games for PS3 without Resident Evil 6?

The same kind of gameplay intertwined with branching story arcs interspersed with memorable moments from other games including key characters from some of my favourite R.E games.

We’re talking Leon from R.E 2 and 4, Chris from the first R.E game, Code Veronica, and R.E 5), and a new guy called Jake.

What I love the most about Resident Evil 6 is the fact that all of the levels can be played co-op together with a friend. If you don’t have friends, you can just the computer do it’s thing alongside you.

If you’re really good and complete everything you get to dive into some Ada Wong levels too.

Expect puzzles galore, lots of tense storyline moments, and more zombies that you can sake a stick at!

6. Dead Rising 2 (2010)

Dead Rising 2 takes the 6th place in this list of the best zombie games on PS3. Instead of a brutal soldier taking on the masses, players control Chuck Greene, a former motocross champion.

I mean, if anyone can escape from hordes of zombies in quick fashion, I guess it’s gonna be him!

His daughter has been attacked by her undead mother (not always undead, obviously). That could be zombiephillia or something.

Basically, this game is ‘The Running Man’ with zombies. Chuch enters a game where he kills zombies for money so he can buy his daughter zombie-preventing medicines. Some of the zombies escape and infect an entire city, and the military are after his blood.

Initially, players only have 72 hours to complete all of their tasks. That means finding Zombrex for Chuck’s daughter, escaping the city, and proving Chuck’s innocence in the space of three days.

No pressure, right?

Move around an open environment playing the game entirely how they want. Listen, you don’t even need to save your daughter or anyone else in the game if you don’t want to. You can do a couple of side quests then just spend all your time killing zombies.

With no right or wrong way to play and multiple endings to uncover, Dead Rising 2 is a game that will keep you coming back time and time again!

5. The Walking Dead: Season Two (2013)

The Walking Dead: Season Two hardly needs an introduction. so many of you will have watched the iconic TV series and read the comics, and the game has all the same thrills and spills that you’ve come to love over the years.

The game is actually based on the comics, and weirdly it’s not a full season, just one episode of a five-part series.

Unlike many of the other games above, this game is more about surviving rather than attacking zombies. working alongside other NPCs and basically doing everything possible to not die.

Choice plays a huge part in this game; every decision you make as a knock on effect, with some choices effectively killing other characters forever.

Also, if you import a save file from the first game, then some of the choices you made in that title will sway things the happen in Season Two.

That makes the ice key in Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie look a little lame now, doesn’t it?

There are no puzzles to solve in this title, just QTE moments ala Heavy Rain, with some object interaction gameplay thrown in for good measure.

4. Call Of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

Call of Duty: Black Ops takes the 4th spot in this list of the best zombie games on PS3.

I know, these games are initially known for their warfare elements, but over 5.6 million people bought this game for the epic zombie mode too.

And out of all the Call of Duty games, Black Ops boasts the gnarliest of them all!

Take a break from battles in the 60s and move onto the Nazi zombies map Kino Der Toten, pumping brutal undead soldiers full of machine gun fire in eerie and impossible scenarios.

There are multiple zombie-themed maps available, with players sporting Cold War weapons as they fight for survival.

I’m not gonna lie, even for a game from 12 years ago, it’s still scary as hell. I’ll get so into this game that I often swear my head off, only to turn around and see my friends looking at me and crying with laughter.

I think I need to take a break…

3. Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare (2014)

I really wanted to Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare in 2nd place, but I just couldn’t bring myself to place it above the next title in the list.

And to be honest, some of you might think that this game’s inclusion is a bit of a cop out. Still, the clue is in the name, and Plants vs Zombies has been an absolute bawler of a game ever since it came out.

Garden Warfare took things to a whole new level. Picking classes, going up against either plants or zombies depending on your personal preference, and wield all kinds of crazy intense weaponry that, while the game is based on modern warfare, would look ridiculous in a Call of Duty game.

Moving away from the traditional ‘protecting a patch from oncoming hordes’, this game feels more like Overwatch with the weirdest characters going.

It was only an online title, so sadly it can’t be played on the PS3 due to the servers going down. If you want to get in on the action in 2022, you’ll need to grab it for the PS4.

2. Resident Evil 5 (2009)

Resident Evil 5 takes the silver medal in today’s list of the best zombie games on PS3, an absolute stonker of a title starring Chris Redfield of R.E 4 fame.

We’re back to working against the Las Plagas parasite corrupting individuals and that epic over-shoulder view we first encountered in the 4th game.

We meet Sheva too, Chris’s sidekick, both characters working together as they fight for survival while all hell breaks loose around them.

Like Resident Evil 6, there’s a co-op mode where players can work together either via split screen or on multiple consoles.

The graphics are stunning too, further proof that even in a world where the PS5 reigns supreme, the PS3 can more than hold its own.

These zombies have got some serious angst and attitude too, shooting and showing sharp objects and projectiles at Chris to try and take him down. If things get a little hairy, Chris can fight them in close combat, but I like to keep my zombies as far away as possible and just blast them until they disintegrate, thank you very much!

1. The Last Of Us (2013)

The results are in; The Last Of Us is officially the best zombie game for the PS3!

I know; this game always tends to top my best PS3 games lists, but for very good reason. The game is in unprecedented success, one of the most popular titles ever made and a true tour de force that sparked a TV show!

Enter Joel and Ellie, a smuggler and a teen trying to stay alive in a rundown, waitron version of America. Mutants want to eat them, humans want to kill them, and all they want to do is catch a break.

This game looks great and plays even better. Listen to enemies encroaching on your area, discover Joel and Ellie growing as a stronger unit as they work together, and try not to lose your mind when you destroy mutants wanting to tear your face off.

If you’re after a Zombie game with more of an adventure mode for you to play through and so much thrilling action that you’ll probably need therapy afterwards, then give this game a go.

I promise, you won’t forget it in a hurry!
